A new start in Montenegro: where to begin?

Perast and the shore of the Bay of KotorLIVING GUIDE · 15 Sep 2026

Choosing a town or a home can be the first step towards moving to Montenegro, but a lasting plan means thinking about how everyday life will work. Your work arrangements, family needs, budget and personal application conditions affect one another.

Set your priorities

Write down what you want to do in your first year. Starting a company, continuing your current work, moving with family or exploring the country may call for different preparations. Listing each family member’s needs separately makes it easier to build a shared plan.

  • What are your daily work and transport needs?
  • Are there school, healthcare or particular accessibility needs?
  • Have you set separate budgets for temporary accommodation and a long-term home?
  • Have you confirmed which procedures require your personal attendance?

Prepare for the residence consultation

Explain your nationality, current situation in Montenegro, purpose of stay and any family members you plan to apply with. Travel documents, accommodation, means of support and insurance may be considered depending on the application type. These topics do not replace an individual official checklist.

Document validity, translation requirements and application methods must be confirmed for your file. If you plan to form a company, assess your residence and work needs separately. Consultancy does not guarantee an authority’s decision or its timing.

Separate initial and recurring moving costs

Distinguish transport, moving, housing deposits and translation costs from rent, daily expenses and any business costs. Prices vary with needs, location and contracts, so do not base decisions on a total without a date and defined scope.

Keep documents and next steps together

For each document, agree who will prepare it and the expected delivery date. When working with Viola, you can follow team-updated stages and shared documents for services in your scope through the client portal. These are not application outcomes automatically retrieved from government systems.
